Report: Interpretation of 2014-15 Water Quality Data from Kaelepulu, Kailua
Following publication of the City’s 2008 Kaelepulu Drainage Improvement Study produced by AECom, the City decided it needed better data to design the necessary water quality improvement features. AECom and their subconsultant TEC installed six automated samplers to collect water from representative City and State DOT-H storm drains leading to the estuary. Rainfall, water surface elevation, and physical water quality (at one location) data were also collected. Samples were analyzed from five rainfall events that occurred between July 2014 and February 2015. This data and all associated QAQC documentation (files linked below) were obtained from the City as a result of a FOIA request submitted in March 2017. The report (linked above) authored by REBourke is derived directly from the data provided by the City and confirms that the storm drains are the major source of pollutant loads to the estuary. The concentrations of ammonia nitrogen, nitrate plus nitrite nitrogen, total phosphorus, and enterococcus are 7-times, 31-times, 9-times, and 35-times higher than the concentrations defined by state standards for estuaries.
